what is special about our aftermarket headsets

acros_INSIDE_2020-03_headset-mood-bearing-sealing_06_retuschiert2Gh7b6QF7vCEBE

high-quality angular contact ball bearings

In our aftermarket headsets, we use angular contact ball bearings. These bearings cope particularly well with the radial and axial forces that come into play at the headtube. That’s why they contribute to a long lifespan of your headset.

sophisticated sealing technology

A whole range of seals effectively keeps moisture and dirt away from the heart of our headset, the stainless steel ball bearings. For you, this means: less maintenance and excellent durability for more time on the bike.

water-resistant bearing grease

We use a highly water-resistant bearing grease. It is extremely tough and thus remains where it belongs: inside the headset bearings. Which ensures, that your headset is well protected against wear, as well as against water and dirt.

v-groove double split lip sealing

The industrial ball bearings in our headsets are equipped with unique double split lip sealings. It prevents water or dirt from making its way into the headset bearing and washing out the grease. This ensures a long service life.

seals on crown race and compression ring

We vulcanize a self-reinforcing seal onto the fork crown race and compression ring. It is made of an extra robust material preventing the seal from becoming brittle over time. You’ll get optimum protection for the bearing and only minimal friction is generated.

internal protection sealing

Our Internal Protection Sealing (IPS) protects the ball bearing from moisture inside the frame. Water often accumulates in the head tube and attacks the bearing from the inside – this seal maximizes the service life especially with larger frame openings and integrated cable routing.

frequently asked questions

You can find spare parts for your headset in the spare parts category (here).

our headset spare parts

If you want to replace your fully integrated headset (is – integrated standard), you don't need a special tool. With this type of headset you simply put the bearings into the head tube of your frame. Just follow our assembly instructions and pay attention to the mounting position of the bearings and your are good to go!

To replace your semi-integrated headset (zs – zero stack), you need a headset cup remover and a headset cup press tool, e.g. our inexpensive diy-headset-tool.

Yes and no! We offer bearing sets for many BH Bikes headsets. Each set contains an upper and a lower bearing and a new compression ring. We offer all other headsets as top or bottom kits.

We develop and manufacture your headset to make it your loyal, inconspicuous companion. Nevertheless, like many other components on a bike, it is a wearing part. But with proper installation, care and maintenance, you can combat wear and tear and therefore maximize your worry-free time on your bike. Find our assembly and maintenance instructions as a PDF download on the respective product page of your particular headset.

By the way, we agree: high pressure cleaners are a great, time-saving affair. However, the strong water jet – often over 100 bar – is poison for your ball bearings because the high pressure can rinse out the grease. Even the best seals won’t help here if you’re not careful. Therefore avoid water blasting the area around the headset, but also around the bottom bracket and frame bearings. Apart from that, be careful around these areas with bike cleaners like Muc-Off. After all, these cleaners basically work as degreasers that will happily dissolve the grease in your bearings and, as a result, make them wear out much quicker.

PS: Did you know that when having your bike on the car roof in the rain and at high speeds, is similar to cleaning it with a high-pressure cleaner? Accordingly, it is worthwhile to watch your max speed, cover your beloved bike and regularly re-grease your headset.

Almost nothing is more annoying than crackling sounds on your bike. They are usually caused by friction between two (dry) metallic surfaces. Often it is not that easy to find the cause of the unpleasant noises and you need to play detective first. It can, but does not always have to be the headset that causes sound effects. Often the connection between the handlebar and stem or between the steerer tube and stem can also be the reason for the noise. If the sounds are certainly caused by your headset: A little grease often solves all your problems, as we like to say. So the best thing to do is simply remove the headset and generously apply grease. If that doesn't help either, you have probably just used your bike as intended by the developers: a lot and often and hopefully with a big grin on your face. Only a new headset will help then, because ball bearings are still wearing parts, even though our engineers are doing everything to change that!

Unfortunately we do not always know for sure which acros headsets and bearings are used in the different BH Bikes models. We do our best to keep our database up to date and to extend it. However, sometimes we need your support for that! If you can't find your model, just follow our our short guide. Our headset-experts will then recommend the right headset for your bike.
